Cat Litter Smell: Why a HEPA Filter Doesn't Fix Ammonia

Cat Litter Smell: Why a HEPA Filter Doesn't Fix Ammonia

If the room smells like a litter box, a HEPA filter will not fix it — and this is the most common money-wasted purchase in cat ownership. Here's the chemistry, and what actually works.

The smell is a gas, not a particle

Cat urine odour is mostly ammonia, which is a dissolved gas. HEPA filters are designed to trap particles — dust, dander, pollen — at 0.3 microns. Ammonia molecules are roughly 0.0003 microns. They pass through a HEPA filter as if it weren't there.

What you need is adsorption: activated carbon (or a carbon/zeolite blend) actually binds the gas. So the filter you buy must have a carbon stage with real weight to it — 1kg of carbon, not a thin grey sheet glued to the back of a HEPA.

In order of how much difference each step makes

  1. Scoop twice a day, not once. Ammonia starts forming within hours of urination. This single change does more than any appliance.
  2. Dump and wash the whole box weekly with unscented soap and water. Not bleach — bleach plus urine produces chloramine gas, which is worse than what you started with.
  3. Enough litter depth: 5–7cm of fine clumping litter. Shallow litter leaves urine on the plastic, and plastic holds the smell permanently.
  4. Replace the box every 12–18 months. Scratched plastic is a sponge; no amount of cleaning gets inside the scratches.
  5. Then a carbon filter running near the box, changed every 4–6 weeks.

What about "odour control" litter?

Most of it is baking soda and fragrance. Baking soda does bind some ammonia, but it's exhausted within days in a wet box. Fragrance masks for the human nose and irritates the cat's — a scented box is a common reason cats start avoiding it, which makes the smell worse.

When the smell means something medical

Two situations where the smell is a symptom, not a maintenance problem:

  • Ammonia that's suddenly much stronger in an older cat often means more dilute, more frequent urination — kidneys or thyroid. Worth bloodwork.
  • A sweet or fruity smell in a cat who's drinking and peeing more is not normal litter smell. That's a vet visit this week.

The cheap test that settles the argument

Move the box to a room with the door shut for a day and see if the smell follows the box or stays in the room. If it stays, it's absorbed into soft furnishings (curtains, sofa, carpet) and no filter will touch it — that's an upholstery wash or an ozone treatment, not a purifier.

If the cat is older and the box habits are changing, the pain signs worth checking matter more than the smell. And if you're brushing more often because of the shedding that comes with age, this is how to keep what the brush collects.

If you'd like to keep a little of them

Fur is the one thing you can still collect after they're gone — from a brush, a bed, a favourite blanket. These are the pieces people choose most for it.
