Self-Warming Pet Heating Pad — 110V Waterproof — Warmth for stiff joints, no electricity

It usually starts with the floor. He stops following you into the kitchen, or he stands at the edge of the tiles for a second before stepping onto them, and you assume he's just slowing down. What's actually happened is that he's learned the floor is slippery and he no longer trusts his back legs on it. Most of what determines an older dog's quality of life is not medication — it is the surface he walks on.

The floor is the biggest lever. Slipping is the mechanism behind most senior-dog decline: a dog that slips loses confidence, walks less, loses muscle, and then slips more. Non-slip runners along the main paths, yoga mats at corners and turns, and rugs where they get up from sleeping are cheap and change outcomes within weeks. Yours are not the only floors — the vet clinic, the car, the groomer all matter.

Ramps over stairs. A car ramp removes the jump that most often causes a real injury. For indoor stairs, block them rather than allowing one or two trips down per day — it is the descent that hurts.

Raised bowls. Neck and shoulder strain at floor level is real for a dog with spondylosis. A 15–20 cm raise often changes how eagerly they eat.

Harness, not collar. A dog with neck or spinal pain should never be led from the throat. A well-fitted Y-front harness spreads load across the chest.

Weight. Every kilo lost takes roughly 4 kg of load off the joints. If a dog needs to lose weight, that is the highest-yield intervention available, ahead of any supplement.

Supplements — honest version. Glucosamine and chondroitin have weak evidence in dogs; they are low-risk and some owners report benefit, but they are not a substitute for weight control and pain management. Omega-3s have somewhat better evidence for joint comfort. Green-lipped mussel has small positive trials.

Vet-guided options worth asking about: NSAIDs (the mainstay, with bloodwork monitoring), monoclonal antibody injections for osteoarthritis pain, laser therapy, hydrotherapy or underwater treadmill, and physiotherapy. Ask specifically — many owners never hear these exist.

Sleep. Orthopedic foam, and warmth. Cold stiffens arthritic joints; a heated bed or a warm room at night is not a luxury for a 13-year-old dog.
