Paw Print or Nose Print? Which One to Keep

Both are small, both are unmistakably theirs, and both take about ten minutes. The difference is what you're keeping.

A paw print is a shape

It's the outline you know from the mud by the back door — four toes, one pad, the little gap where the dewclaw sits. A paw print reads instantly as a dog or a cat, even to someone who never met them.

It's also the easier of the two to take. Most pets tolerate a paw being pressed for a few seconds far better than having their face handled.

A nose print is a signature

The ridges on a nose are as individual as a fingerprint. A good nose print is a record of this animal, not just any animal — and that's why people who take one tend to frame it.

The catch: it needs a still, cooperative moment. A sleepy pet after a walk is your best window. A lively one at dinner time is not.

Which to choose

If you can only do one, take the paw. It's more forgiving, more recognisable, and easier to take well.

If you have the chance to do both, do both on the same day, on the same paper, and keep them together. A paw and a nose side by side is the most complete small record you can make at home.

Do it while they're still here

This is the part people skip. A paw print taken on a good Tuesday afternoon costs nothing and takes ten minutes. The same print taken in a hurry, in the last hours, is much harder — for you and for them.

It doesn't have to be solemn. Do it after a walk, give them a treat, and put the paper away. You don't have to look at it for years.

Keep it clean

Ink on fur is the reason most people put this off. A clean-touch ink pad uses a membrane so the ink never touches skin or fur — press the paw, lift, done, no bath afterwards.

Whichever method you use, press firmly enough to get the pad shape and no harder. A faint print is easy to keep; a smudged one isn't.

Store the paper flat

Between two sheets of card, somewhere dry. Not folded, not in a wallet. If you're going to frame it, frame it within the year — paper left loose yellows at the edges.
