What to Write on a Pet Memorial Frame

What to Write on a Pet Memorial Frame

A frame is mostly a photograph. But the line underneath is what turns it from a picture into a keepsake — and it's the part people get stuck on.

Here are twelve that work, and a few rules for writing your own.

If you want simple

  • Always with us.
  • Our good boy. Our good girl.
  • Home was wherever you were.
  • Still the best part of the day.

If you want their name to carry it

  • Bailey · 2011 – 2026 · Never a bad day with you.
  • Mochi · Kept every promise.
  • Olive · Small dog. Enormous life.
  • Finn · The reason the door was always open.

If you want something they'd have "said"

  • I was loved the whole time.
  • You were my favourite person. Don't tell the others.
  • I'll wait by the door.
  • Thanks for the good years. All of them were good.

Three rules for writing your own

Keep it under twelve words. A frame is small. Long lines get read once and then stop being read.

Use a detail, not an adjective. "Loved walks" is forgettable. "Would not walk past the bakery" is theirs forever.

Write it for the version of you in ten years. Not the version in the first week. If a line only works while it's raw, it will feel heavy later.

What to include with the photo

Most people put the dates in, then wish they'd put in more. A frame with a collar space gives you room for the tag as well — name, dates, and the physical thing, all in one place.

If you have a paw print, a small scan of it can go in the corner. Two records of the same animal, one frame.

Where to hang it

Somewhere you pass, not somewhere you stop. Hallways and kitchens work better than bedrooms — you'll see it a hundred times a week without it becoming a place you go to grieve.

That's the trick of a good keepsake. It becomes part of the furniture of your life, not a shrine in the corner of it.
