5 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Pet Keepsake
Almost everyone buys in the first two weeks — which is exactly when you're least able to evaluate anything. You're choosing an object in the middle of the worst part of it, usually late at night, usually on a phone. These are the five questions people come back and say they wish they'd asked.
1. What is the chamber size, in millimetres? "Fur keepsake pendant" covers everything from a 6 mm bead to a 25 mm locket. A small chamber holds a thumbnail's worth of fur and reads as a solid colour; a larger one shows individual strands and colour variation. Neither is better — but people who expect to recognise their pet in a 6 mm bead are usually disappointed.
2. What material, exactly, and how does it age? Ask for the specific resin or glass. Cheap epoxy yellows in 3–5 years in daylight; UV-stabilised epoxy lasts much longer; borosilicate glass is effectively inert but heavier and more fragile. "Resin" alone is not an answer.
3. Is the fur sealed away from the material, or cast into it? Fur behind glass or a lens (dry, never touching polymer) ages best. Fur cast directly into resin is protected from moisture but is permanently bonded — if the resin yellows, the fur is inside it.
4. Can it be opened or added to later? A piece you can add a second lock to in five years is worth more than one that is permanently sealed. Ask directly; many sellers have never been asked and will tell you honestly.
5. What happens if it breaks? Glass cracks, wood splits, clasps fail. Ask about repair policy and turnaround before you send irreplaceable material. And never send your entire supply — keep at least half at home, dry and dark.
One more, free: ask to see a photo of the finished size next to a coin or a hand. Scale is the number one surprise in this category.
