Wood vs Glass vs Resin Keepsakes: An Honest Comparison

October 8, 2026 · Stillglow

Ask three makers which material is best and you'll get three answers, all of them self-serving. Here's the version written without a product to sell: each of these solves a different problem, and each one has a failure mode that nobody mentions at checkout.

Wood (walnut, oak, cherry)

  • Strengths: Warm, ages beautifully, can be refinished. Best choice for a box that holds whiskers or a larger lock, because wood can be machined to precise internal dimensions and lined.
  • Weaknesses: Moves with humidity. A lid that fits perfectly in winter can bind in summer. Solid timber can check or split if it dries too fast. Oil-finished wood needs re-oiling every 6–12 months.
  • Best for: boxes, display pieces, anything that stays home.
  • Avoid if: you want to wear it daily, or you live somewhere with extreme humidity swings and no climate control.

Glass (borosilicate, or lead-free art glass)

  • Strengths: Chemically inert. It does not yellow, ever. Fur behind glass stays exactly as it went in. Clearest view of the material itself.
  • Weaknesses: Fragile, heavier than resin, and thermal shock will crack it (hot car, cold windowsill, then a warm hand). Some pieces have visible seams where a lens was sealed.
  • Best for: pendants and small display pieces where you want to actually see the fur.
  • Avoid if: the wearer is rough on jewellery, or the piece will live in a bathroom.

Resin (epoxy)

  • Strengths: Cheapest to produce, allows shapes glass cannot (domes, florals, inclusions), light.
  • Weaknesses: Yellowing is the big one — cheap epoxy visibly amber within 3–5 years under indirect daylight, faster in sun. Scratches easily and cannot be polished back by hand. Once fur is cast in, it is in there forever.
  • Best for: budget pieces, decorative objects, anything kept in a drawer rather than worn in daylight.
  • Avoid if: the piece will be worn daily or displayed near a window, unless the maker specifies UV-stabilised resin.

The underrated option: stainless or titanium with a sealed chamber. Not romantic, but it will outlive all three of the above and it survives being worn in the shower.
