Fur Keepsake vs. Fur in a Jar: What People Regret

There are two kinds of people in these threads. One kept the fur in a bag in a drawer and hasn't opened it in three years. The other spent real money on something custom and wishes they'd asked two more questions first. Both of them made the same mistake: they decided in the first week, when they were least able to.
Regret pattern one: "it's in a bag in a drawer and I never look at it." This is the most common. People saved the fur in the first raw days, put it somewhere safe, and then could not face opening it. Years later the fur has yellowed, or they have simply lost the emotional thread to it. The thing they wish they had done was make it visible early — while the feeling was still fresh and the fur was still clean and dry.
Regret pattern two: "I paid a lot for something that doesn't look like them." This happens when someone commissions a custom piece in a hurry, without asking what the chamber size is, what resin is used, or what the finished piece actually looks like at 10 mm. A pendant that holds a thumbnail-sized tuft is not a portrait; if you are expecting recognition, you will be disappointed.
The decision that avoids both: ask one question first — do you want to touch it, carry it, or just know it's safe?
- Touch it → framed mount or an open-lidded box. Best for larger amounts, best for texture.
- Carry it → a locket or a small glass-fronted pendant. Best for a tuft, not for volume.
- Just know it's safe → acid-free envelope plus silica, dark drawer. Free, and completely valid.
One rule that applies to all three: never use the whole amount. Keep at least half in reserve, dry and dark, untouched. Materials fail, tastes change, and a second piece for a sibling or a child is a real thing people come back for two years later.
