Why Pet Fur Turns Yellow in a Plastic Bag

Leather Pet Fur Memory Charm — Holds a pinch of fur, worn daily

Most people find out the hard way. Six months on, you open the drawer to show someone what you kept, and the fur has gone the colour of old paper, and there's a smell. The first thought is I ruined it. You didn't. The bag did. Three things happen at once, and all three are the plastic's fault.

Three things happen at once. First, plastic is not airtight in the way people assume — it is a vapour barrier, not a seal, and a small amount of water vapour is trapped inside when you close it. Second, that trapped moisture condenses and re-evaporates with every temperature swing, and keratin absorbs and releases it. Third — and this is the part most people miss — plasticisers in soft plastic slowly migrate out as a gas, and those compounds react with the oils naturally present in fur. The result is a yellow-brown tint plus a faint sour or waxy smell.

Sunlight accelerates all three. A bag on a windowsill can discolour in a single summer.

What to do if it has already happened. Take the fur out, lay it flat on a paper towel in a shaded, ventilated room for 24 hours. Do not use a hairdryer or a radiator — heat sets the discolouration. Once dry, move it to an acid-free paper envelope or a glass jar with fresh silica gel, and store it dark. Some of the tint will lift as it dries; most will not. Keratin staining is largely permanent, which is why prevention matters more than rescue.

If it is heavily soiled rather than stained, you can rinse gently in cool water with a drop of mild shampoo, press — never wring — between towels, and dry flat. Be aware that wetting short fur can felt it permanently, so test on a small pinch you can afford to lose.

Prevention in one line: paper or glass, silica, dark drawer, no plastic, no sunlight.
