How Long Does Pet Fur Actually Last?

The question usually arrives at two in the morning. You've kept a lock of fur in an envelope for a few weeks, and now you're lying there wondering whether it will still be there in twenty years, or whether you're only delaying the moment it disappears. The answer is longer than most people expect, and the reason is unglamorous.
Museum collections hold fur specimens from the 1800s that are still intact. Forensic and archaeological work routinely recovers hair from conditions where everything else has gone. In a normal indoor environment there is no biological clock ticking on a lock of fur — it is not "perishable" in the way people fear.
What actually ends it:
Moisture. Above roughly 60% relative humidity, mould and mildew colonise the oils in the fur. This is the number one killer, and it is entirely preventable.
Insects. Carpet beetles and clothes moths eat keratin. They are drawn to fur that has been stored undisturbed in a dark corner for years — the same conditions that are otherwise ideal. A cedar block or a sealed container solves it.
UV light. Direct sun bleaches pigment and breaks down the protein structure over years. A drawer, a box, or glass with a UV filter solves it.
Repeated handling. Oils from your hands and mechanical friction gradually compact and mat the fibres. This is fine — it is what "wearing it" means — but it does change the texture over a decade.
Practical expectation. Sealed, dry, dark, pest-free: no meaningful change in 30 years, and probably much longer. In an open display in a humid climate: a few years before visible yellowing. The variable is the environment, not the fur.
