Getting a Paw Print From a Pet Who Won't Stay Still

Every guide assumes a calm animal sitting still in good light. Anyone who has actually tried this knows the real version: you're crouched on the floor at nine at night, the animal is wriggling, and the card has already slipped twice. Here is what works on the version that isn't calm.
Timing beats technique. The best prints I have seen were taken when the animal was already asleep or just waking up — paws relaxed, no resistance. Mid-afternoon after a walk, or the ten minutes after a meal, are the reliable windows. Do not attempt it when the pet is excited or hungry.
Two people, one job each. One person holds and soothes — hand under the chest, forearm along the belly, no scruffing. The other does the pressing. A single person trying to hold, press, and transfer will produce a smear.
Work on a non-slip surface. A towel on a table. A pet that is sliding will fight the process no matter how calm they are.
Take the back paws, not the front. Front paws are what the animal uses to push away. Back paws are far more tolerant, and the print is equally good.
One press, then stop. If the first attempt fails, wait twenty minutes. Repeated attempts turn it into a wrestling match and the animal remembers.
If it truly will not work, switch targets. A nose print is often easier — most animals will let you touch the nose briefly, and the nose leather takes the medium cleanly. Some people also get a good print from a sleeping pet by pressing the card against the paw rather than the paw against the card.
For cats specifically: a towel wrap (body only, head free) for thirty seconds is usually enough. Never force a leg; a cat that panics will scratch and you will not get a second attempt that day.
