Why Ink Paw Prints Fade (and What Actually Holds Up)

Paw & Nose Print Kit — No ink on fur, no mess, 2-minute print

The print is four years old and you can still see it — just. It has faded to the colour of weak tea, and the paper around it has yellowed, so the whole thing reads as older than it is. Ink on paper fades for three separate reasons, and only one of them is the ink.

Reason one: the ink is on the surface. Standard stamp ink sits on top of the paper fibres rather than bonding into them. Every touch lifts a little. A print handled weekly will visibly lighten within two years, and a print on a fridge door in daylight will do it in months.

Reason two: UV. Most black stamp inks are carbon-based and reasonably lightfast, but the paper yellows, and the contrast that made the print look crisp disappears even if the ink itself survives.

Reason three: acidity. Cheap card stock is acidic and slowly embrittles and browns. That browning is what people describe as "the print going yellow."

What holds up:

  • Archival or acid-free card with a UV-filtering glass frame. This is the single biggest improvement and costs almost nothing.
  • Scanning at high resolution immediately. A 600 dpi scan is a permanent backup and costs 30 seconds. Do this before anything else, for every print.
  • Ink-free transfer medium tends to be more stable than wet ink because it deposits a pigment layer rather than a solvent-carried dye, but it is still surface-applied — it needs the same protection.
  • Clay or wax impressions do not fade at all, but they crack and lose fine detail, which is a different problem.

What does not work: laminating (traps acid and moisture), hairspray as a fixative (yellowing), clear tape over the print (adhesive migration), or keeping it in a photo album sleeve that is not archival.

The practical answer: scan it, print a copy to display, store the original flat in an acid-free sleeve, dark and dry. The original is an artefact; treat it like one.
