How Much Fur Do You Need for a Pendant?

The first time someone opens a keepsake pendant and sees how small the chamber really is, the reaction is almost always the same — mild panic, and the thought that can't be enough. It is. It's less than almost anyone assumes, and that is the first useful thing to know about this.
A typical fur-keepsake pendant has a chamber roughly 8–15 mm across and 5–10 mm deep. Filled with loose fur, that is about the volume of a thumbnail — somewhere between 0.1 and 0.2 grams. A single grooming session on a medium cat produces many times that.
What actually determines how it looks is not weight but fibre length and colour variety:
- Short, uniform fur (most cats, short-coated dogs) compacts into a dense, almost felted mass. It reads as a solid colour block. Use more than you think you need to get visual texture.
- Long or double-coated fur shows individual strands and catches light. A small pinch goes a long way, but the strands want to poke out of the chamber, so it needs to be seated carefully.
- Mixed colour — take fur from the ruff, the tail base, and the back. A single tuft from one spot often looks flat and doesn't read as "them."
Collection tips that matter later:
- Collect with a clean brush or by hand, never from a lint roller sheet (adhesive).
- Store in a paper envelope, not plastic, even for a few days.
- Label the date and where it came from if you are collecting over time — three years later you will not remember.
- If the pet is still with you, a weekly brush-out into an envelope builds a reserve with no pressure.
Reserve rule: keep at least twice what the piece needs. Two-thirds of the fur staying in the drawer is normal and correct.
