Whiskers: What They Are and How to Keep Them

You find them everywhere and almost never on purpose. A single whisker on the floor, on the sofa, in the bed — and you pick it up without thinking, because putting it in the bin feels wrong. Whiskers are not fur, and that difference is the whole reason they need their own rules.
They fall out on their own, constantly. Cats shed two to four whiskers a month, dogs similar. Finding one on the floor and keeping it is completely normal and has no effect on the animal. What you should never do is trim or pluck a whisker from a living pet — it is genuinely disorienting for them and it does not grow back quickly.
Keeping them is harder than keeping fur, for one reason: they are brittle and they hold a curve. Practical rules:
- Never tape them down. Adhesive pulls the keratin sheath and leaves a residue that yellows.
- Store straight. A rigid box with a soft lining — a small wooden case works better than an envelope, because envelopes bend and the whisker takes a permanent set.
- Keep them dry. Whiskers are more prone to becoming brittle than fur; moisture and then drying makes them snap.
- Do not roll them into a ball "for safety." A crease in a whisker is permanent.
Display options that actually work: a shallow glass-topped case, a wooden box with a velvet bed, or a frame with the whisker mounted horizontally on acid-free board. Casting a whisker in resin is possible but fussy — they float and orient unpredictably.
A note on mixing: whiskers and fur age at different rates and want different conditions (whiskers want no bending, fur wants no compression). If you keep both, store them separately rather than in the same pouch.
